Spirit of Mary Ann Award 2026

June 29, 2026

Even in old age Mary Ann McCracken was extraordinarily active. She just didn’t stop! In her letters to Dr Madden there are many references to her ‘out of door avocations’ including the Industrial School, visiting the sick, and collecting subscriptions. She thought it better ‘to wear out than to rust out’ – a fitting motto which accurately sums up the character of this remarkable woman.

As part of the legacy work of the Mary Ann McCracken Foundation, supported by the Belfast Charitable Society, many schools in North Belfast took part in the Spirit of Mary Ann Awards, celebrating kindness and compassion for others, courage in standing up for what is right, or through their contribution to the wider community.

Some of the winners from the inaugural awards, with the following winners:

  • Nico Forgione from Cliftonville Primary School
  • Kian Hamill-Gaynor from Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagáin
  • Freya McGlinchey from St Columbans Primary School
  • Sophie Norris from Seaview Primary School
  • Matilda Mc Pherson from Hazelwood Integrated Primary School

Jim McDaid from Hazelwood said about Matilda

“She has consistently demonstrated the values you would expect from a kindness award. Selfless, considerate and respectful. Matilda is a member of our pupil council and has ( Like Mary Anne) used her voice as an advocate for others.”

Máire Hegarty from Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagáin said

“This was awarded to Kian in recognition of his bravery in the face of adversity and as someone who always , despite the difficult circumstances, makes a positive difference in all his contributions to school life. Kian is a very intelligent, caring young man and we wish him well as he continues his educational journey.”

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners from everyone at the Mary Ann McCracken Foundati
