Modern Day Slavery

Mary Ann was a tireless abolitionist, who could be found, at the age of 86, at the Belfast Docks handing out anti-slavery leaflets to emigrants bound for North America. While she lived to see slavery abolished in the United States in 1865, she would undoubtedly be appalled to learn that our global economy allows for the scourge of slavery to continue. Taking up David Olusoga’s challenge to deeply engage with the realities of the slave trade, rather than to just focus on Mary Ann as an abolitionist, the Foundation is currently exploring how to best support the work of local anti-slavery and human trafficking charities, and to amplify slavery survivors’ voices.
